What is the Environment Agency?
Over the past few years the planet has been faced with an increase in the number of ecological and environmental problems that it is facing. In response to this the Environment Agency task is to counter this through various recovery and repair programs.
The Environment Agency is divided into two distinct parts, the Abiotic and the Biotic Divisions.
Abiotic
The Abiotic Division deals with the non-living part of our biosphere, i.e matters of pollution and contamination. Its role is to secure a healthy environment, not only for humans but all indigenous species. The Abiotic division also contains organizations that are concerned with the environment and such issues. This division also has the task of dealing with the mass deforestation that is taking place in some parts of the world.
Biotic
The Biotic Division deals with the living aspect of the planet, excluding humans. It hopes to counter problems such as the extinction of certain species.
It is also concerned with possible Biological Invasions, this is where foreign species have been introduced to an area and as such indigenous species have been out competed and the population numbers have fallen greatly. An example of this is the introduction of the Grey squirrel to England; it has brought the numbers of the native red squirrel down to dangerous regions.
Is it too late?
For some items under consideration it is too late for any recovery programs, but for many there is still the chance that by working together we can repair the damage that we have done, but we must start now.
The EA is at present putting together a resource network of other organizations, through co-operation it is hoped that more can be achieved.
As a part of the UEA the EA must bear in mind the consequences of its actions, socially, economically and politically, and in that way we can have a greater effect. With the combined resources of the other agencies we can better understand the problems and so produce better solutions. Solutions that are better for the environment, the people involved and the planet.
